Chapter 17: The Seven Streams - Part 1

During Lu Yan's leisure time, besides reading, archery, and occasionally watching horror films, he would indulge in 20th-century romantic dramas.

Mainly to learn how humans express emotions normally.

That year, when he was twenty, the protagonist on TV cried and said, "Don't fight because of me." At that time, he sneered, thinking, "If they're already fighting, what's the point of saying that?"

Now, Lu Yan also wanted to shout loudly, "Don't fight because of me."

But circumstances didn't permit.

"Give my sister back!"

Lu Jiahe's tone was unusually violent, the flames beside him relentless, akin to a fierce demon emerging from the depths of hell.

Tang Xunan drew his sword, the flashing blades weaved into a dazzling yet deathly net. Everything around him began to decay and corrode.

Time is the fairest yet cruelest force in this world.

Black dragon scales emerged from Tang Xunan's skin.

He raised an eyebrow, "Want it? Come and get it yourself."

Needle against the wheat, thunder against the fire.

"If I were you, I'd find a safe spot to watch this show. These two are lunatics when provoked. You're too weak, easily drawn into their conflict."

Upon hearing this, Lu Yan instinctively left the battle scene and asked, "System? How are you back?"

"It's quite peculiar. As he moved, the raging sea of fire automatically parted, creating a safe path for him. It was a spectacular sight, akin to the mythical tale of Moses parting the Red Sea.

['The energy fluctuations here are too intense. The Dream Eater feels like it's losing control of the dream realm, so it's running away, lest it be easily dealt with by Tang Xunan. And with the Wall of Resentment looming, it's about to appear... Anyway, I'm safe.']

['Ah, I know you're dying to know who the Dream Eater is—it's that Lin Sinan from your text messages. He's skilled in some tricks, but when faced with combat-oriented abilities and his true form exposed, he's just a junior.']

The system sighed deeply: ['Ordinary folks encountering this kind of scenario would surely perish. Because in the big brother's dreams, no matter what, the little sister meets a fatal end. He couldn't save Lu Yan back then, so naturally, he can't save you now.']

['After his little sister's death, Lu Jiahe's mind got a bit messed up. He always believed his sister simply ran away from home. He was infected at a very young age, cursed with misfortune, which only erupted completely after his sister's demise, turning him into a Pollutant. He wandered countless streets, searching for his sister until, unfortunately, he encountered that wall eight years ago. You're his three-thousand-six-hundredth reincarnation.']

['Oh, did I forget to provide information about the big brother?']

['Lu Jiahe, codename... um, when he entered the Wall of Resentment, Lu Jiahe was merely an E-Class Pollutant with a contamination value of less than 200, so he doesn't have a codename yet. Now, contamination value: 12939.']

['Mutations: Fire Element, Bone Blades']

['Mutated directions: Carbonization, Pyrokinetic Transformation, Lucky E']

['If luck is on his side, he might obtain his third talent here...']

['Luckily, you're a koi fish. No, not a koi fish, you're a runaway Disney princess, guarded by S-Class Apocalyptics and an S-Class Pollutant. Feeling thrilled, sister?']

Lu Yan clenched his fists at the teasing tone of the system. He glanced at his watch. The degree of mutation had risen to ninety.

As a research-driven doctor, Lu Yan would periodically check his watch and note the changes occurring in his body as the degree of mutation increased.

At 50, noticeable aberrant features appeared—fish scales, fins on his face, thirst for water and blood, and ringing in his ears.

By the time it reached ninety, these aberrant features diminished. However, his emotions became notably erratic, making Lu Yan feel like plunging into a river at any moment... or experiencing a rebirth.

Thankfully, his innate calmness and minimal emotional fluctuations helped suppress these peculiar feelings.

Lu Yan gazed at the distant flashes of blades. Lu Jiahe lacked weaponry but possessed bone claws that materialized out of thin air. As they clashed, it produced the tremor of melee weapons in close combat.

These were gifts bestowed upon Lu Jiahe in his repeated cycles. Once, he almost saved his sister, but back then, he was a low-level Pollutant, and his hand was chopped off by the nanny's axe, watching helplessly as the axe split his sister in half.

After that cycle, bone blades sprouted from Lu Jiahe's hand.

He felt incredibly thirsty, longing for water."

The flames consumed everything, though they didn't touch Lu Yan, the scorching heat seemed to evaporate all moisture in the vicinity.

Licking his parched lips, Lu Yan was aware that it only accelerated the loss of fluids within him. However, his insufferable thirst overrode his control, "What about Tang Xunan's data?"

"Tang Xunan, S-class Harbinger, codenamed 'Tyrant,' with a psychic threshold fluctuating around eleven thousand," the system responded.

"Talents: Dragon's Bone, Bloodthirst Gene, and an incomplete Time... Time ranks third in the talent hierarchy. Unfortunately, he can only access a portion. It's inevitable; not everyone is as fortunate as you, having a generous system like me," the system continued.

"Degeneration level: 941."

"He's the Tyrant?" Lu Yan was taken aback.

Having never met the Tyrant, Lu Yan pictured an elderly man, perhaps in his fifties, whose spirit remained strong, gaze unwavering. Maybe someone with a bad temper, losing sleep over the fate of humanity while battling pollutants for years, thus suffering from various ailments.

But what he hadn't imagined was that the mightiest human force, based on appearance alone, resembled a college-aged man, confident in his looks, donning military cosplay.

Of course, within the realm of Japanese anime settings, this was not entirely implausible.

Taking a drag from a cyberpunk e-cigarette, the system replied, "[Yes. Initially, when choosing a codename, he wanted 'Qin Shi Huang.' They rejected it, calling it historical nihilism, unable to pass scrutiny. So, it eventually became 'Tyrant.']"

As Lu Yan and the system idly observed, the blackened wall beside them suddenly veiled in crimson.

The blood seemed animated, ceaselessly circulating and converging.

The intense metallic scent of blood once again overpowered the odor of burning debris. Lu Yan turned to find, to his astonishment, that amidst the charred wall, a blood-formed figure had coalesced.

Countless bloodied hands reached out towards this figure, seemingly torn between clutching it and pushing it away.

Or perhaps, these bloodied hands held conflicting intentions from the start.

The eerie scene startled Lu Yan, causing his degeneration level to uncontrollably surge by 01.

Struggling, the blood-formed figure took slow steps towards Lu Yan. With its movement, the surrounding temperature plummeted, an unnatural chill enveloping the area. From being amidst the inferno moments ago, Lu Yan now felt almost frostbitten.

Goosebumps riddled Lu Yan's back, "What is this thing?"

"That's a manifestation of resentment from the Wall of Resentment. You should be familiar with her," sighed the system. "This is the condensed entity of Lu Jiahe's resentment. Within the Wall of Resentment lie countless souls of the unjustly deceased... Ordinary individuals may become a part of the Wall after a dozen or so reincarnations, but Lu Jiahe cycled through it thousands of times, losing all memories except the eternal resolve to save his sister. Consequently, within this wall steeped in bloody resentments, his sister became the most formidable entity."

"This place is both void and reality. Humans are composed of memories. If the form dies but the memory remains, who would they be?" the system queried.

Finally freeing herself from the hands behind her, the girl made of blood stepped forth from the wall into reality.

The hands remaining on the wall transformed into numerous blood-formed beings, leaving only a pair of eyes, some brimming with blessings while others exuded intense malice.

They were all individuals who perished within the Wall of Resentment. Some hoped this young girl could break the curse, granting their souls true peace, liberating them from the cycle of despair and suffering. Others envied her, yearning for the final release...

"Normally, I should let you go, but it seems my sister has something to say," the blood-red figure, devoid of facial features, voiceless, a mere mass of blood, gradually approached Lu Yan.

The detection table displayed its contamination value: 700.

As a derivative of the wall, upon leaving its confines, it wasn't remarkably potent.

Extending her hand towards him in an inviting gesture, Lu Yan gulped.

He was thirsty, incredibly so.

As if under a spell, he, too, extended his hand, gripping the girl's hand.

The mouth on Lu Yan's palm opened wide, greedily swallowing, while the blood mass condensed, shrinking until it completely merged into his body.

Lu Yan's mind flooded with memories that weren't his own. Finally understanding why the girl extended her hand: "I give you my blood. As an exchange, let me briefly borrow your body."

His soul departed from his shell, overseeing the world like a divine being, observing everything. At that moment, nothing could escape his scrutiny. He even witnessed a few black ants crawling out from crevices in the scorched soil.

In his ears echoed the system's voice: "[Ah, congratulations. This is the perspective from which I usually view the world.]"
