The Invasion Day - Chapter 67

Captain Zou voiced the difficulty. Tang Xuhai fell silent, while Fu Shiwu adjusted his glasses and said, "I think I can find it."

Tang Xuhai stared at him, both shocked and angry. "Shiwu!"

Fu Shiwu calmly replied, "Xuhai, I believe you understand that in this situation, only I can find the third-level aberration."

Tang Xuhai, furious, scoffed, "How will you find it? A third-level aberration won't just show up before you!"

Fu Shiwu remained undeterred. "Continuing to defend passively will lead to the city's downfall. These aren't the few aberrations outside the southern prison; this is a siege of hundreds of thousands. Normal aberrations can be handled with firepower, but there are too many second-level aberrations! Only by killing the third-level aberration is there a chance to disperse the second-level ones."

Fu Shiwu took a deep breath and said indifferently, "So, someone must go, find the third-level aberration, and then kill it."

"I disagree!" He realized something and growled softly.

Tang Xuhai was emotional, breathing heavily. He always knew Fu Shiwu tended to be overly decisive in critical moments, sometimes without considering his own life. It wasn't the first time he'd experienced this, but this time was different, too perilous!

He preferred holding the fort on the city walls.

Captain Zou was puzzled, not understanding why Tang Xuhai vehemently opposed.

He hesitated and addressed Fu Shiwu, "Leader Fu, if you have a way to find the third-level aberration, it's best. I will report it to the command."

"No!" Tang Xuhai shouted.

"Tang Xuhai!" Fu Shiwu's momentum intensified, his gaze sharp on Tang Xuhai.

Tang Xuhai's face turned stiff, recalling the circumstances at that time. Fu Shiwu was pushed forward not just because both he and Wen Zhaoming were unwilling to submit to each other, but also due to the imposing image and presence he naturally exuded.

Moreover, in critical moments, Fu Shiwu didn't need prompting; he would automatically make choices advantageous to everyone, even if sometimes it endangered himself.

This aspect impressed both Tang Xuhai and Wen Zhaoming, so they promoted him without complaint.

However, facing this situation now, Tang Xuhai was reluctant to let Fu Shiwu take the risk. He had undertaken life-threatening missions and seen comrades sacrifice themselves, but the thought of Fu Shiwu in such danger was hard to accept.

Tang Xuhai panted heavily, glaring at him with a livid expression.

"I'll go with you!" Thoughts raced in his mind as he said, "Besides, we need to draw from the entire Pei City and form an elite suicide squad!"

"A suicide squad?!" Captain Zou's eyes bulged.

What's the concept of a suicide squad? It's a small team comprised of fearless individuals tasked with executing special missions.

"Why form a suicide squad?" Captain Zou didn't understand. "You just need to find the aberration; you don't have to get involved personally. The military will take care of eliminating the third-level aberration."

Tang Xuhai angrily retorted, "Shiwu is using his ability to find it! Currently, his ability's range is only over a thousand meters. Do you think he'll say if he finds the aberration within that range? We have to venture deep among the aberrations. So, without a determination to risk everything, don't even think about finding the third-level aberration."

Captain Zou was startled, looking at Fu Shiwu's calm face. It was no wonder the surname Tang was so opposed; delving into the midst of aberrations was too dangerous, with slim chances of returning alive.

He solemnly asked Fu Shiwu, "Leader Fu, are you sure you want to find the third-level aberration?"

Fu Shiwu had been gazing absentmindedly at Tang Xuhai—of course, it didn't show on the surface. Tang Xuhai's unexpected anger and agitation made him feel an unexpected warmth from being cared for.

Fu Shiwu answered obliquely, "Xuhai, you don't really have to come with me; it's very dangerous."

Tang Xuhai sneered and said, "Do you think I've faced fewer dangers? Don't underestimate me! Since you dare to go, don't think of stopping me."

Fu Shiwu's silence rendered him speechless, so he just shut his mouth.

Captain Zou, observing the atmosphere, had to steel himself and ask again.

Only then did Fu Shiwu look at him and say, "I'm sure. If we don't find the third-level aberration, we're heading toward certain death."

The aberrations acted abnormally at night while the cannon fodder during the day had depleted much of Pei City's strength. At this time, the third-level aberration had pushed the second-level ones closer. The situation for Pei City was becoming increasingly unfavorable.

The plan proposed by the Dragonbone Battalion at this moment felt like a lifeline for Pei City's military.

The discovered superpowers, besides a few major types, encompass various peculiar varieties. Hence, nobody finds it strange when the other party suggests using these abilities to investigate.

Swiftly, the military assembled an elite team, daring enough to undertake this extremely perilous, if not deadly, mission.

Tang Xuhai squatted gloomily in front of the city gate, prodding the ground with his dragon bone knife.

Seeing him, with his towering stature, curled up there like a distressed dog, Fu Shiwu felt a subtle emotional stir. A bittersweet feeling surged within him.

He shuffled closer to Tang Xuhai, whispering softly, "I'm sorry..."

Tang Xuhai turned to glare at him. "What are you apologizing for?"

Fu Shiwu awkwardly scratched his nose. "Because of my persistence, I've dragged you into this mess."

Tang Xuhai chuckled and said, "If I didn't want to, who could force me?" Then, he became serious. "Actually, you're not wrong, Shiwu. I admire your courage. But frankly, if it weren't absolutely necessary for you to go, I wish I could take your place. After all, you've experienced too little and faced too much danger."

Fu Shiwu looked at him earnestly. "Xuhai, you're overthinking. As long as the anomalies persist, it'll only get increasingly dangerous. I can't keep hiding in safe places forever."

Tang Xuhai understood this truth. He sighed in frustration, thinking, 'But this feels like nurturing weeds.'

After brooding for a while, Tang Xuhai lifted his head, a glint in his eyes.

"I need to make a trip to the logistics department, need to do some more preparation," he declared, walking off with determination.

Fu Shiwu stood there, dumbfounded, watching his departing figure, wondering what else he was planning.

When an armored vehicle roared loudly toward him, Fu Shiwu was utterly bewildered.

The front of the armored vehicle was slightly flat, with two small windows, while the rear was a large, boxy structure with eight large wheels. There were several small gun ports on the top, loaded with weapons. It looked extremely formidable.

Tang Xuhai opened the top hatch and gestured coolly at Fu Shiwu. "Get in!"

Fu Shiwu climbed up and entered through the top hatch.

The interior wasn't spacious; apart from the lookout position, everywhere else required a bit of bending.

In front was the driver's area, featuring dashboards and electronic systems Fu Shiwu couldn't comprehend. In the rear box-like area, seven or eight people were seated.

At that moment, one of them stood up and saluted him. "Reporting to the chief! Daredevil Squad's leader, Geng Liangguan, reporting to you!"

Fu Shiwu's face flushed suddenly; he stood there stiffly, not knowing what to say.

"Ahem, our leader isn't good with words, just call him Chief Fu directly," Tang Xuhai intervened.

"Yes!" Geng Liangguan boomed loudly.

Tang Xuhai, in an effort to reassure Fu Shiwu, patted his back and introduced, "These are elites selected from the H Province military district. They'll assist us in completing this mission."

Under his warm palm, Fu Shiwu gradually relaxed. He spoke with a dignified and aloof expression, "It's an honor to complete this mission with all of you."

Tang Xuhai continued, "These individuals are all third-tier ability holders selected from various regiments. With their help, I believe we can exterminate all third-tier anomalies and resolve the crisis in Pei City!"

Geng Liangguan thundered, "Determined to complete the mission, ready to defend Pei City to the death!"

The booming voice of a trained soldier, it felt like it could rupture Fu Shiwu's eardrums.

Geng Liangguan continued, "Chief Fu, your primary task is to locate the position of the third-tier anomaly. Our mission is to eliminate it. Rest assured, with us, third-tier ability holders, we'll ensure your safety."

Formally, they were to follow Fu Shiwu's commands, but these soldiers were not convinced. Despite admiring Fu Shiwu's courage to plunge into the midst of anomalies, it didn't mean they could accept the commands of an amateur.

Tang Xuhai, a former soldier, knew their tendencies well. In such a critical time, there was no time to vie for command with them.

Tang Xuhai's gaze darkened. He hoped Geng Liangguan wasn't an incompetent leader. Otherwise, he wouldn't hesitate to take charge.

Fu Shiwu was completely unaware of Geng Liangguan's intentions. He hadn't considered commanding these professional soldiers. He had a clear understanding of his role: find the third-tier anomaly.

Of course, about protection and such, who knew how things would turn out then?

Fu Shiwu patted the guns on his body.

He had four guns on him—besides the new one given by Lieutenant Zou, there were the two he used yesterday. To carry enough ammunition, he deliberately wore a tactical vest filled with magazines.

Additionally, although Tang Xuhai didn't use guns, his tactical vest also had magazines for Fu Shiwu.

Now, there shouldn't be any worries about running out of bullets!

The city gate slowly opened; soldiers threw dense grenades, some wielded flamethrowers, creating a chaotic barrage as the armored vehicle rushed out.
