During breakfast, everyone felt that Fu Shiwu's mood was particularly low, and involuntarily kept their distance from him.
Nonchalantly stuffing food into his mouth, Tang Xuhai cleared his throat, saying, "Hurry and eat, we need to meet with Zhou Weihua's people."
Peering over his glasses, Fu Shiwu gave him a sharp look. Tang Xuhai, thick-skinned, just grinned in response.
Fu Shiwu felt deflated. Dealing with someone so incorrigible, he couldn't really get angry. What could he do?
He pursed his lips, determined not to compromise with dark forces!
Zhou Weihua and his group deeply respected Fu Shiwu for liberating them from the clutches of Shi Zheng. Miao Jia suggested sending some of their strongest fighters, and all five who once faced Tang Xuhai's unparalleled strength joined them.
Seeing these five people, Tang Xuhai relaxed. He turned to Fu Shiwu, saying, "Focus on scanning Level 2 and Level 3 anomalies today. We'll handle the defense of the low walls."
Captain Zou had mentally prepared for another tough day, so seeing their numbers double brought immense relief.
"Where did these ability users come from?" he asked.
"They all entered Pei City with us, but they've just settled in and haven't registered," Tang Xuhai introduced the five to Captain Zou.
Knowing these five were attack-based ability users, Captain Zou felt reassured.
"Good, with them, we should be able to get through this alien attack," Captain Zou nodded. "Besides, I have some good and bad news."
Raising an eyebrow, Tang Xuhai quipped, "Surprised to see Captain Zou's fondness for this setup. Start with the bad news."
Though I argued vehemently, the logistics department insists that the supply of firepower ammunition is limited. The flamethrowers and grenades will be provided according to the preset allocation, no more than that," Captain Zou's face darkened as he spoke. "It's their higher-ups' inefficiency."
Tang Xuhai's expression soured. Squinting, he snickered, "Your superiors are truly useless."
A hint of awkwardness flashed across Captain Zou's face. He defended, "It's not entirely their fault. Logistics is under their control," he took a deep breath. "But rest assured, soon the new weapons will be in use. They won't have control over the logistics once the new equipment is deployed."
Captain Zou forced a smile, saying, "Now for the good news. My superiors heard about our sharpshooter here and allowed us to use the new weaponry in advance. Behold! This is an energy-pulse handgun specially prepared for Commander Fu."
In his hands were two shiny guns, slightly larger than Fu Shiwu's. The handles were broader, and the magazines appeared distinctive.
"What's this?!" Tang Xuhai exclaimed, even during his time in the Special Forces, he hadn't encountered this gun's style.
Finally feeling a sense of victory, Captain Zou proudly introduced, "This is a brand-new weapon designed by the Institute's weapon expert based on the energy structure of Source Molecules! Inside this magazine," he showed them, "is a device that extracts Source Molecules from the air, converting them into energy bullets. The remarkable feature of this gun is its self-charging capability. It can shoot 200 energy bullets per charge, but each recharge takes 12 hours."
The group marveled at it, while Fu Shiwu felt a mix of excitement and complexity.
Despite the new weaponry eliminating worries about ammunition, it was terrifying how quickly humanity found a way to weaponize Source Molecules, reflecting the destructive capabilities of mankind.
"But this gun has a slight flaw for now," Captain Zou touched his nose, looking a bit uneasy. "Because the energy in the bullets is too strong, the gun can't be used continuously; it needs to cool down. Of course, this limitation is due to the material used. Once we have better materials for the gun body, it'll be perfect."
"You mean the gun might explode?" Tang Xuhai's face darkened. Any weapon with instability shouldn't be used. It was playing with Fu Shiwu's life!
"It won't explode, but the gun body will heat up," Captain Zou hurriedly explained. "If the temperature exceeds the melting point, the gun body will deform, affecting bullet accuracy."
"After deformation, if the bullets get stuck and can't be fired, won't it still cause an explosion?" Tang Xuhai skeptically eyed him.
"Through our experiments so far, there hasn't been a case of jammed bullets. The gun body deforming slightly only affects accuracy. So, if accuracy is compromised, it's better not to continue using it until the deformation blocks the barrel!" Captain Zou stressed.
"In combat, such extreme situations might still occur," Tang Xuhai frowned, taking the matter seriously.
Fu Shiwu saw Tang Xuhai might annoy Captain Zou further, swiftly stepped in, taking the two guns and sincerely thanked Captain Zou.
Captain Zou, for now, didn't bother arguing with Tang Xuhai, the stubborn fellow, and arranged for the soldiers to come down from the low wall and take their place.
Tang Xuhai said to Wen Zhaoming, "Today, you and the people from Pingnan take turns on the front line."
Wen Zhaoming shook his head, "There's no need to be so cautious; with a wheelchair, I can sit up high."
Tang Xuhai didn't press further; pushing Wen Zhaoming might hurt his pride. He said, "Don't force it, do what you're capable of."
Fu Shiwu glanced at him, his gaze oddly shifting away. This guy was always eager to prove himself—what right did he have to advise others!
Of course, Tang Xuhai didn't think he was showing off; he was just resilient.
Zhou Weihua and others had faced the siege caused by the Level 3 anomalies at Pingnan Prison. Despite their surprise at the overwhelming number of anomalies, they remained composed. This time was different—they had a powerful base and firepower at their backs, boosting their confidence.
Captain Zou, observing from above, realized that the reinforcements today were exceptional, giving Tang Xuhai and the others a higher regard.
With the addition of fresh troops, Fu Shiwu stood indifferently, arms crossed. Later, he ascended to a higher point to survey from afar, perplexing Captain Zou with his enigmatic demeanor, adding weight to the Dragonbone Battalion, a team of only eight.
Fu Shiwu paid no mind to the odd looks from fellow soldiers. He simply adhered to Tang Xuhai's request, scanning periodically to differentiate the evolved anomalies and higher-tiered creatures within the mass of anomalies.
What puzzled and worried him was the absence of these anomalies.
It was too odd...
Continuously tensed, Fu Shiwu's complexion gradually paled. Tang Xuhai occasionally glanced up, feeling a pang in his heart. He climbed from the low wall onto the high one.
Tang Xuhai tapped Fu Shiwu's head gently. "Hard work?"
Fu Shiwu, pale-faced, pursed his lips, expressionless, and shook his head.
"Okay," he furrowed his brow slightly, looking up at Tang Xuhai with diminished vigor.
This sight tugged at Tang Xuhai's heart. After a moment's thought, he said softly, "You're human, not a machine that scans constantly like radar. How about this? Scan every fifteen minutes."
Fifteen minutes matched the frequency of the anomalies' attacks, and significant changes wouldn't occur within that time.
Fu Shiwu twitched the corner of his mouth, a slight curve appearing. "Got it."
Tang Xuhai, still concerned, patted his shoulder before leaping down from the high wall.
At noon, the shift changed. Captain Zou directed someone to take over with flamethrowers and grenades. After an hour of rest and meal for the nine, they resumed the battle.
The weather was exceptionally clear that day, the autumn sun intense, and the breeze relatively cool. Those standing atop the walls were under harsh sunlight, enduring combat in challenging conditions.
However, the formidable firepower from Peicheng played a crucial role. There were hardly any breaches or casualties, boosting everyone's confidence. As evening approached, the sunlight faded.
Just as darkness neared and people started to relax, an unexpected change occurred!
In Fu Shiwu's three-dimensional image, a bright wave suddenly appeared at the end of his line of sight—a wave composed entirely of Level 2 anomalies, numbering in the thousands!
Fu Shiwu's tense nerves almost choked him, and his eyes widened involuntarily.
"That's a wave of Level 2 anomalies!" Fu Shiwu's voice shrilled. "Incoming!"
"What's coming?" The soldiers defending on the high wall beside him looked puzzled, peering into the dimming twilight, overwhelmed by the horizon filled with the spreading anomalies.
Tang Xuhai had been fighting all day. Despite using recovery tonics yesterday, he relied more on physical strength, and now, he was starting to feel fatigued.
Just as he was relaxing, thinking about heading back for a hot bath, he heard Fu Shiwu's shout.
"Trouble!" Tang Xuhai cursed softly. These anomalies were becoming craftier, exploiting human patterns, launching a full-scale attack with Level 2 anomalies when vigilance was at its lowest!
"Level 2 anomalies are here!" Tang Xuhai roared. "Stay alert! Use all your abilities to fight!"
Captain Zou couldn't believe it. Looking at the suddenly tensed group after Tang Xuhai's roar, he became nervous.
"How did you know?" Captain Zou shouted from the high wall.
"It's our leader's ability!" Zhen Zi turned around, shouting at the bewildered soldiers, "Quick, bring more ammunition! We're in for a big fight!"
