Chapter 553: Memories

After returning to his room, Liang En immediately began studying the newly acquired diary. After a brief examination, he confirmed there were no hidden compartments or codes within.

It made sense, as the diary seemed intended for venting emotions, with no secrets hidden inside.

For ordinary people, this would be the final result of their investigation. Even with all available evidence, they would only learn about Mr. Carter's personality.

However, for Liang En, this was just the beginning. Due to the precise dates in the diary, he quickly used the 【Appraisal (R)】 card on it.

The reason for choosing this card was simple. By using the dates in the diary, he could quickly estimate the time Mr. Carter hid the treasure and observe it accordingly.

Upon using the 【Appraisal (R)】 card, a new scene appeared in Liang En's mind. He realized that the observer of this scene was fixed on Mr. Carter's diary.

"This is interesting," Liang En thought, using the diary as his observation point, observing the surroundings in a 360-degree view.

From the diary's size and content, it was clear Mr. Carter carried it with him, ensuring it wouldn't be discovered by his companions.

This provided Liang En with a convenience, as he had a high chance of seeing the treasure Mr. Carter hid through the diary.

Since the exact time Mr. Carter hid the treasure was unknown, Liang En focused on the day the event was recorded and the days immediately before and after.

After all, the diary was for Mr. Carter himself, so he would record events as they happened, not days later.

Liang En quickly determined the start time for observation and used the card's fast-forward function to browse through the three days. As expected, about half an hour before the diary entry, Mr. Carter took out a pipe, left his companions, and went outside to smoke.

Liang En immediately recognized the location as near the temple he had previously visited. The temple's distinctive roof and the surrounding hills were clearly visible in the memory.

It seemed likely the group harbored ill intentions toward the temple. However, at that time, the Valmar family still ruled, with many guards stationed there.

For Mr. Carter's gang, skilled in fraud rather than theft or robbery, they eventually abandoned any plans involving the temple.

The reason for their ill intentions was simple. A glance around revealed the local Brahmins had donated a fortune to the temple, making it almost impossible to resist the temptation.

However, the temple's strict defenses and devout followers created a solid barrier. Even the most greedy criminals knew the high risk of stealing from there.

Although traditionally not ambitious, the Indians' religious devotion made tampering with the temple extremely risky, making it an unworthy endeavor from a cost-benefit perspective.

Thus, the gang chose to excavate a royal temple instead, which Liang En and his team had previously discovered. In Mr. Carter's memory, after smoking, he went to the excavation site for an inspection.

The excavation was nearly complete, so Mr. Carter's visit was merely to observe, not to dig.

During the observation, he took the opportunity to leave the others' sight under the pretext of using the restroom, and hid a wooden box from his backpack near the excavation site.

"Randomly hiding it in the rainforest... I hope the items aren't perishable or rust-prone. Otherwise, after a hundred years, they'll be ruined," Liang En thought as he watched George Carter sneak a small wooden box from a stone crevice and place it in a banyan tree hole, covering it with dead branches and leaves.

Given the rainforest climate, Liang En knew such an environment was unfavorable for preserving items, making it uncertain if the hidden treasure would still be valuable.

Despite this uncertainty, Liang En ended the historical observation and immediately set out for the ruins with Jeanne, Fan Meng, and four servants to uncover the hidden treasure.

Due to the discovery of important ruins, a path had been cleared through the jungle for transporting materials. Though the path was rough, it allowed tricycles to pass.

However, riding a motorcycle there was ill-advised. Despite the Indians' riding skills, it didn't make the journey any more comfortable.

Upon arriving near the now bustling ruins, Liang En's legs felt almost detached from his body. Standing by a bodhi tree for a while, he finally regained his strength.

The archaeological site was crowded, resembling a bustling square. In addition to archaeologists, security personnel were stationed there.

Seeing Liang En, everyone greeted him. After exchanging greetings, Liang En led his group to the treasure site near the archaeological area.

The treasure site had become an overgrown clearing over time, but the banyan tree still stood prominently in the center, much larger than he remembered.

Given the banyan tree's longevity, it wasn't surprising it survived. However, this posed several challenges for their task.

The main issue was the tree hole, which hadn't expanded as Liang En had imagined but had grown over, sealing the original hole.

"Alright, I believe it's here," Liang En sighed, looking at the banyan tree. "Our target should be here. Everyone, search for any human traces."
