A school that starts its sports competition with a siege match in early November can only be Supreme High School.
Reading the schedule provided by the school multiple times, Sihyun blinked his eyes and took a deep breath as he listened to the following instructions from the teacher.
He had expected it to be anything but ordinary, but he never imagined they would have a siege match.
Supreme High School's siege match.
A virtual reality team game where teams are divided into defending and attacking teams with fortresses on the field. Since it's an event format opening match, only a total of 30 students from all grades participate, with the participants being all students from Class A of each grade and two students from Class B, meaning Sihyun, being in Class A, had no choice but to participate.
Facing seniors for the first time since enrollment in a siege match. It was a situation he didn't want at all. Reflecting on his performance during the placement test, Sihyun glanced down at the schedule. Except for the siege match, there was nothing different from any other school, but that one difference was too significant.
"Teams will be divided into Blue and White teams, and all of you in Class A will draw lots in the auditorium during the 5th period."
As Sihyun only stared at the schedule, the teacher added explanations. Usually, teams are formed within the class to foster harmony, but since Supreme High School had a different class assignment system, doing so would lead to serious imbalance. Taking that into account, they decided to divide the Blue and White teams within each class.
It was good that they didn't have to worry about class rivalry, but Sihyun didn't like the rest at all. Why were they picking teams through a lottery in front of the whole school, while other classes from B to D were pre-assigned by the school? It seemed like an unnecessary plan.
"So, will four of us from our class be on the White team and the rest on the Blue team?"
"Yes! Two representatives from each class B will be selected in the morning, and students from Class A will form teams in the afternoon. After the teams are decided, the commanders will be chosen through team meetings."
In a friendly tone, the teacher explained in detail in response to Seowoo's question. Considering that there were also eight students in Class A, Sihyun half-heartedly leaned on his desk. Since they were supposed to play the siege match in teams of 1 and 2, it meant that they would be playing the game in a place where there was practically no one they knew, or at best, one person depending on the team assignment, among the unfamiliar seniors.
Would they even care about them, who were Quadruple-Class?
Without a doubt, he could be sure that they wouldn't. Busy seniors with guild experiences, guild affiliations, had probably only heard rumors about him.
As he sighed at the thought that he would be receiving various looks as soon as he met them, Haewoon scolded him from the front, asking if he was going to create a pit there. Sihyun swallowed his breath and threw his eraser toward the round head, then lay back on his desk.
The talk of various preparations for the sports competition came in through his left ear and flowed out through his right. Blinking his eyes in dismay, his hand shook from the corner of his vision where his eyelashes could be seen swaying. It was Baek Geonu's hand.
"What's wrong?"
With an expressionless face, he shook his hand honestly and asked. Sihyun let out a short sigh and opened his mouth.
"Not feeling up for it."
"The siege match?"
"Yeah."
"Why?"
"Just... not feeling it."
It was a headache of a game where trouble with teammates was almost guaranteed if you made a wrong move, and you also had to come up with strategies for command. And if there were disagreements or fights, wouldn't it be the first-year students like them who would bear the brunt?
Of course, who would just passively accept being the scapegoat?
His rolling eyes scanned the faces of the Class A kids. Seowoo was on the patient side, easily passing it off, but the other Class A kids didn't belong to the patient side. Yesol, who seemed harmless on the surface, was actually a bit of a gossip, Sungjeong was straightforward to the point of being rude, and even Jihye was clear about not liking things she didn't like. Haru also had a personality, so the rest of the kids were outspoken to the point of being painful.
Thanks to them, he didn't worry about the kids being scapegoats, but the problem was the situation that arose when they weren't eaten up by the scapegoating.
Calling the school a small society was unreasonable, as it led to arguments among seniors that first-year Class A students didn't know anything, which would only lead to them getting hurt.
Looking at it from various angles, there were valid reasons for me to dislike the siege match. But no matter how much I disliked it, the schedule was already set. As always, as a mere student, I had no choice but to do it even if it was annoying and difficult.
As he made a groaning sound, the homeroom teacher took out another piece of paper and handed it to Seowoo.
"Until the sports competition, classes will mainly focus on self-study, so make good use of that time to prepare! Each student can apply for up to three games per person for the games they need to participate in, so it would be nice to look at them in advance."
The teacher finished the ceremony and left the class. At the same time, the kids who got up from their seats like hyenas that found prey approached Seowoo's seat to check the participation application forms. Sihyun also stopped wriggling on his desk and joined in stealing glances at the application form. There were a total of twelve events that could be participated in.
Soccer, volleyball, dodgeball, ultimate frisbee, jump rope, long jump, flipping tiles, 100m race, obstacle race, jumping rope, performance, relay.
There were so many that it was tear-inducing. Starting from Class A, the written application forms went to Class B, C, and D, and it was noted that for events where the number of participants exceeded the limit, tests would be conducted to select players. Sihyun, who read the explanation that you could choose the event after the team was decided, mentally decided on the events he wanted to participate in.
For now, he hated long-distance running, so he passed on soccer, relay, and long jump. He couldn't do the jump rope because he lacked strength, and he didn't want to risk danger by not knowing what obstacles would come out in the obstacle race.
Skipping the ball games because he was bad at handling balls, the only remaining options were flipping tiles, 100m sprint, jumping rope, and performance. What on earth was the performance event? He couldn't even begin to guess.
"What's a performance?"
He asked with a subtle hint of doubt, and Haewoon waited for Sihyun's question as if he knew what he was going to ask.
"Performance must be an ability performance, right? It's an event that we have every year at the sports competition. People from different regions come to watch it at every sports competition, so it's eye-catching for the audience. If you show something pretty or cool with your abilities, the judges will score based on the difficulty of the skills they use, expressiveness, etc., and the team with the highest total score wins. Didn't you know?"
Listening to the explanation that flowed naturally and neatly, nodding along, Sihyun suddenly widened his eyes as he caught something strange in the middle.
"Why do other people come to our sports competition?"
"Well, because it's the Supreme High School Sports Competition, isn't it?"
"...?"
Not understanding the words that came back, he blinked his eyes. He thought he had a pretty good idea of this school by now, but he didn't expect another surprise. Seeing his expression of not understanding, Haewoon added that it was a public sports competition, so many people from the neighborhood and guild officials would come to see it. Sihyun was once again fed up with Supreme High School, which he was already tired of.
"They're revealing everything, aren't they?"
"So what are we all going to do?"
"Weren't we supposed to decide after the teams were formed?"
"It won't make much of a difference now anyway!"
Haewoon, who said that writing now or later wouldn't make a difference, first brought a pen and wrote his name for flipping tiles, jumping rope, and ultimate frisbee. Starting with him, the other kids wrote their names on the participation application forms with a slightly bewildered look from Sihyun. Lastly, Sihyun picked up the pen, pondered for a moment, and wrote down his name on the paper handed to him.
Since he didn't have confidence in jumping rope, the events he could write down were already decided.
Flipping tiles, 100m sprint, performance.
He wrote his name on those three places and put down the pen. Surprised by what Sihyun had applied for, Haemin opened his mouth as if surprised.
"You're doing performance?"
"There's nothing else to do."
"True. How come you don't know anything?"
"Then what are you doing?"
"Relay, obstacle race, soccer."
It was very much like Haemin's type of event. As expected, he seemed to have chosen activities that were more active, so I asked about the remaining kids' events. Down chose jumping rope, volleyball, and long jump, while Haru chose jumping rope, 100m sprint, and obstacle race. Jihye opted for flipping tiles, long jump, and dodgeball. Gunwoo went for jump rope, ultimate frisbee, and flipping tiles. Lastly, when I asked Seowoo about his events, he softly smiled and said it was obstacle race, volleyball, and performance.
"You're doing performance too?"
"Why? Is it weird?"
"No, nothing."
It didn't seem easy to do performance with an inspector class. Still, since he was going to do it anyway, I scanned through the application forms. Upon checking, everyone except me was going for obstacle race in their rooms.
To just dash off without knowing what obstacles might come up was quite reckless. If something like a firing platform came out, it would be quite amusing.
Thinking about the three tall men putting their feet into the firing platform and jumping around, Sihyun burst into laughter momentarily, then handed the application form back to Seowoo and returned to his seat.
After lunch, as we headed to the auditorium for the fifth period, Haewoon clung to Sihyun just before opening the auditorium door.
"I want to be on the same team as you, Sihyun!"
"Why?"
"There might be a lot of people who would stop if you told them to during the siege match!"
"I don't think there are any."
As Sihyun quietly denied, Haewoon shook his head slightly. Sihyun glanced around, wondering if there would be anyone who would actually stop if he told them to during the siege match, and caught Seowoo and Haru's eyes.
When their eyes met, both of them smiled faintly. Sihyun, who momentarily wondered if that was possible, soon shook his head.
Seowoo was one of the people who had a record of aggressively pushing and pulling during partner battles, and Haru also seemed to be excited about matches against people. In the case of the siege match, since it was virtual reality, it seemed like he would push forward without any hesitation.
Thinking that it probably wouldn't work out as Haewoon said, Sihyun opened the door and entered the auditorium. The second-floor seats were packed with students, which was quite surprising to Sihyun, who was used to seeing only first-year students. Glancing around for a moment, Sihyun soon looked towards the people waiting for them in the center of the auditorium.
A total of sixteen people.
Among them, he met the gaze of a particularly spirited person. When he silently stared at the man with black hair and black eyes, the man who was staring back at him turned towards the principal. The principal, confirming the position of Class A students, picked up the microphone.
"Now, let's begin the selection of the A team for the sports competition."
At his words, the students in the stands cheered. Hearing shouts like "Pick Kang Sihyun's team!" intermittently, Sihyun took a breath and waited for the principal's further explanation.
