Chapter 18: The Seven Streams

Lu Yan blinked and found Lin Sinan standing before him, eyes bloodshot, a gun aimed at his forehead.

The sky outside gleamed, indicating it was three in the afternoon.

Lu Yan hesitated, raising his hands in surrender, trying to appear harmless. "Calm down. We're awake from the dream."

Lin Sinan's hand holding the gun trembled slightly. "Who are you?"

"Lu Yan."

"Height?"

"1814."

"Birthday?"

"November 11, 2097."

"University major?"

"Clinical Medicine, Yanjing University."

Lin Sinan, panting, gritted his teeth. "You answered just like the previous one. How can I believe you?"

Frowning slightly, Lu Yan looked troubled, pondered for a moment, and asked, "Is there a '1'?"

Lin Sinan replied firmly, "I'm heterosexual."

"The person ranked 100 on the Revelation Forum has that name." Lu Yan noticed his unstable state and softened his tone. "The forum invitation code you sent me was AK134B9184."

Lin Sinan pulled out his phone from his pocket, checked, and found it matched perfectly.

Finally lowering the gun, Lin Sinan, drenched in sweat, slumped in his chair, exhaustion evident in his voice. "I see... I dreamt I received a mission to bring you back to headquarters. But you were infected, carrying the parasitic disease to another city. Then I woke up, and you claimed it was a dream. Then the same situation repeated. Captain Tang said I wasted his time resetting..."

Lu Yan recalled the scene. "That sounds rough."

Lin Sinan tended to shoulder blame for mistakes. He had previously felt responsible for the parasite incident in K City, burdened by guilt.

Now, reliving a similar scenario in a dream, it wasn't surprising he reached for his gun at the first chance.

He'd rather make a mistake than let someone slip by. When necessary, Lin Sinan would sacrifice himself.

After a pause, Lin Sinan, still shaken, took out a special pill to swallow. "Good thing I didn't shoot immediately. Losing you would have cost me my year-end bonus for the next ten years after the failed retrieval, not to mention half a year's salary."

The headquarters conducted in-depth studies on each Revelation individual and crafted specific narratives. For instance, Lin Sinan, hailing from a small county, dreamed of settling in a big city. Though he'd been assigned a house, extra performance bonuses kept him motivated. Despite Lu Yan making 100,000 in his first month, Lin Sinan's current salary was only 20,000-30,000.

It wasn't stinginess from headquarters. Without goals or prospects, people wandered aimlessly like kites with severed strings, lacking direction.

Hope was a carrot dangling in front of a donkey. Exhausted, the donkey thought of the carrot waiting and managed to take a few more steps.

Glancing around, Lu Yan asked the system, "Where's Lu Jiahe?"

"Gone."

"Where to?"

"Where he's supposed to be. The Wall of Resentment isn't like typical pollutants; it appears for screening. Lu Jiahe is its selection."

"Honestly, with his E-level luck, it's unlikely he'd get this chance. But maybe those two koi fish scales on your neck played a role. The Wall of Resentment chose him... or rather, something through the Wall chose him."

"Maybe the next time you see him, he'll have forgotten his current memories completely, or perhaps, you'll never see him again."

"You're mentioning things that seem beyond my understanding."

"That world is too distant for you. You needn't know much unless you gain similar qualifications. For now, consider it just a dream."

"More than that, you should be concerned about the blood you ingested. That's a bona fide A-grade pollutant."

Most times, pollutants instilled fear, but occasionally, Revelation individuals could gain enhancements from them. Some curative medicines were also derived from pollutants.

"What's it for?"

"Your blood has two uses. First, it can temporarily enhance other Revelation individuals but has no effect on you. Second, it can influence the intelligence of pollutants, sporadic in its efficacy and effective only once per pollutant."

"Because it was actively given by a resentful entity, your body didn't reject it. You truly are becoming a man destined for good fortune, increasing just 1 point in disease severity." The system marveled.

If others knew how effortlessly Lu Yan fused with pollutants, they'd likely feel envious.

Lu Yan felt the situation had turned grim. "Isn't this like real-life selling of Tang Monk's flesh?"

He envisioned a future where unscrupulous capitalists profited by selling his blood worldwide.

"Yeah, and for Revelation individuals with a bloodlust talent, your blood is especially potent. Just be cautious not to be drained. So, I suggest you keep this confidential. I feel like the days until you're captured and taken to a research institute are drawing nearer..."

Lin Sinan checked the map navigation. "Normally, I should've taken you to that mountain village for the rookie mission. But due to the delay on the way, the undead have been dealt with. They even aired an episode of 'Exploring Science' to reassure everyone. The latest task I received is to take you to K City's Contamination Disease Prevention and Control Center and write a report on this encounter with pollutants."

For operatives from the Special Action Division, after each encounter with pollutants, a report was necessary. These reports served as intelligence for the Prevention and Control Center and were then sent to research institutes for scientific analysis.

As the dream collapsed and the Dream Eater departed, the fog shrouding the highway dissipated, revealing its true form.

A few charred bodies lay by the roadside, faint crimson flames still flickering on them, giving Lu Yan a sense of not having left the dream.

As the system had mentioned, what happened in the dream was both a dream and reality.

Recent updates on the Revelation Forum showed the danger index in the contaminated zone of M City's Third High School had decreased from orange to yellow.

After all, for Lu Jiahe to let his sister return to school, he had worked diligently to clean up.

This time, they didn't encounter any further danger.

Due to the contamination disease, Lu Yan hadn't walked the streets of K City during the daytime for a long time.

Here, the vitality had begun to return, as if the contamination disease had never occurred. Crowds bustled, elementary students carried their backpacks to school, office workers squeezed into the subway, and street vendors selling breakfast dodged city inspectors.

Even the tech building in the city center, previously smashed by the undead, had been repaired, walls and glass restored. Dressed in smart attire, professionals moved through it.

However, shops selling frog meat and fish head hotpot suddenly shut down overnight in K City.

Thankfully, the city hall introduced some assistance policies.

After all, regardless of the world's changes, life had to continue.

"The insignificant, mundane, pitiful yet ignorant humans..." The system, observing the bustling streets, sighed, "These lively humans, I really adore them."

Lu Yan rolled up the car window, thinking the system sounded excessively dramatic, but he quite liked these humans too.

The Contamination Disease Prevention and Control Center in K City.

A person stood up, then sat back down, visibly restless. "Hasn't that healing-type Revelation individual arrived yet?"

This person wore training gear, had a buzz cut, and a well-built physique, resembling a warrior fresh out of a Shaolin monastery.

"The navigation shows we're 900 meters away. It's a bit congested," someone replied.

Twisting in his seat, Chen Shier seemed agitated, "Can I go out and bring him back?"

A middle-aged clerk pushed his sunglasses up, "Stay calm. Records show 'Ditan' is highly cautious. If you scare him off, I'll send you back to the Shaolin Temple to cure internet addiction."

"After all, we still want to ask him to save people, right?"
