Chapter 17: Stepson of a Prestigious Family

"Wolf-hearted and treacherous, just like his father." An Na pocketed the check, instructing the chef to prep ingredients. Walking back with Nie Jia to the hall, she glanced upstairs and asked in a hushed tone, "Do you have any plans? Should I confront him on your behalf?"

"No need for you to bother. If Jiang Yang wants to keep worthless things, let him." Nie Jia sneered. "Mom, I'm heading to my room. Call me when dinner's ready."

An Na nodded affectionately as she watched him retreat to his room.

Once in his room, Nie Jia called Huo Qing, informing him that he'd stay back for dinner at home.

"Alright, I'll come pick you up in the evening." Huo Qing's deep voice held a hint of tenderness. He paused before asking, "Did Jiang Yang refuse to hand over the shares to you?"

"You guessed it?" Nie Jia lounged on his bed, tapping his computer, instantly pulling up a city map. While conversing with Huo Qing, he sent an anonymous audio file and location to the police department.

"With the current situation, he wouldn't dare. Without a contract, if he goes back on his word, you can't sue him." Huo Qing remarked.

"That's what Jiang Yang told me. Is this how businessmen like you all are?" Nie Jia chuckled softly.

After sending the file and erasing his traces, he tossed the computer aside, lying on his bed as he continued chatting with Huo Qing over the phone.

Nie Jia had kept Huo Qing out of his affairs multiple times. This time, since Jiang Yang had gone back on his word, Huo Qing didn't pry further. His beloved was smart, and his dominance with outsiders made it hard for others to intervene. So, he let Nie Jia handle it as he pleased.

During dinner, Jiang Yang didn't join them. Nie Jia and An Na dined together, casually discussing Qin Yi Ran accompanying her for shopping during the day. An Na narrated an encounter with Jiang Zhaolin's mistress at the mall.

"I know that woman." An Na served Nie Jia a bowl of soup, speaking calmly about her husband's betrayal, devoid of the initial anger and sorrow. "Her name's Xie Ya, quite beautiful. She didn't fear offending me, a significant client. She stood there for more than half an hour, acting arrogantly, behaving like a wealthy lady."

Nie Jia's expression turned serious immediately. "You let that mistress bully you?"

"No, I ignored her, pretended not to know her. Later, Yi Ran figured it out and made her cry." An Na smirked dismissively. "Initially, I thought she might have been deceived by Jiang Zhaolin. No woman would willingly have a child labeled as a mistress's. But today, it became clear. She wasn't after money; she aimed to push me away and establish herself."

"You give her too much credit." Nie Jia's demeanor grew cold, a hint of hostility in his eyes. Xie Ya hadn't been on his radar until now, but this woman dared to disrespect his mother.

"She'll get what she wants." Nie Jia said indifferently.

As soon as he finished speaking, a loud bang was heard from outside, startling An Na.

"What's going on?" An Na raised her voice.

The housekeeper entered, "Master went out."

"Why did Jiang Yang go out at this hour?" An Na asked, puzzled.

"He received a call, went out hurriedly, didn't even take his coat." The housekeeper replied.

"Leave him be," Nie Jia said.

After sending the housekeeper away, An Na asked him softly, "Do you know why Jiang Yang went out?"

"Somebody was arrested, and he's worried. Don't fret; I have nothing to do with it." Nie Jia quickly distanced himself to reassure An Na, preventing her from worrying.

When Yan Yu died, finding out that the police had approached An Na had kept Nie Jia up all night, afraid they'd implicate his son in something unjust.

In the evening, Huo Qing came to pick Nie Jia up. After a brief greeting with An Na, they left the Jiang residence.

However, within the short half-hour journey back, breaking news on the internet and news flashes stunned the city.

Fang Yan was arrested.

Fang Yan was the head of an underground gang in Moon City, essentially a big shot in the underworld. His influence was vast, nearly controlling the entire city, which made him a prime target for the city police. Whenever there was a murder, the police suspected Fang Yan, but every time, someone confessed as a scapegoat, and Fang Yan always escaped legal repercussions, never even being detained.

Though widely known for his dirty dealings, there were plenty willing to work for him. His impunity had incited resentment among the locals. So, when Fang Yan was publicly arrested at a club, handcuffed, and put into a police car, it sparked citywide discussions!

People speculated if the police had enough evidence this time, wondering if they could finally rid the city of this tumor.

In the interrogation room, a middle-aged man clad in a black coat sat calmly, handcuffed to the table. He glanced around at the unfamiliar surroundings, showing no signs of nervousness. Instead, he offered a defiant smile toward the one-way mirror.

"Officers, if you're accusing me of murder, you ought to tell me who I allegedly killed." Fang Yan shrugged innocently as the chief of the criminal investigation unit entered.

"We don't know who you killed." A junior officer followed behind.

Fang Yan chuckled, leaned back in his chair, and fixed an unfriendly gaze on the junior officer. "New recruit? How's your mom doing?"

"But we'll find out soon enough." The junior officer took his seat opposite Fang Yan, smiling. "After all, the victim was encased in cement. Our forensic team needs time to identify the body."

The mention of cement wiped the confident look off Fang Yan's face. For a moment, a fleeting panic crossed his eyes, swiftly replaced by composure. Coldly, he demanded, "I want to see my lawyer."

"Of course, it's your right." The officer smiled sharply.

As Fang Yan was taken away by the police that night, while the public speculated about his crimes, the next morning, the official TV station's social media broadcasted the discovery of a body hidden in a construction site, identified as Jiang Yang's cousin, Jiang He, the chairman of the Jiang Group.
