Miao Jia had long noticed Fu Shiwu and Tang Xuhai. He was one of those who inadvertently paid attention to Fu Shiwu's marksmanship.
Unlike others who couldn't see through the mysteries, Miao Jia could tell that Fu Shiwu's shooting angles were carefully calculated, predicting the movements of the anomalies accurately.
This left the mediocre cop in awe. Shooting in anticipation of movement trajectories wasn't a big deal, but forcing the target into a gun's path was seriously impressive!
Miao Jia was recruited into the police system for his exceptional talents. He grew up in a relatively good orphanage with a donated computer room, giving him early exposure to computers. He had an extraordinary talent for computers, writing programs at a young age. Yet, due to his youthful ignorance, he got into trouble.
When the police apprehended him based on his physical address, they were shocked. This kid didn't even qualify as a teenager; he was at best an older child.
Due to his age, his punishment was light, just disciplinary action. But these days of discipline were suffocating for Miao Jia, forced labor without access to computers, akin to torture.
Using his computer skills, he found a way to make amends. Surprisingly, the police system valued his talent and agreed. After the discipline ended, Miao Jia learned his lesson, so he decided to join the police academy.
To prevent another potential uncontrollable threat in society, despite his age, Miao Jia was accepted unusually into the academy, and after graduation, he was assigned back to his hometown.
Miao Jia wasn't into physical activities, always sweet-talking teachers in school, letting them overlook his physical fitness and marksmanship scores.
He had seen some really skilled marksmen at school, but compared to Fu Shiwu, those top students were just trash!
Miao Jia was more of a technical person, lacking combat abilities. He always did logistical support work, as rushing into the fray would mean certain death for him. When he visited the government department's warehouse, he felt ignored, so he sulkily left.
Most of the police field personnel had sacrificed themselves; those in the warehouse were mostly administrative staff, some even more skilled than Miao Jia. He didn't respect these people much. Those with similar status probably had slightly higher combat skills, so Miao Jia left the government warehouse and joined another unit's warehouse.
He brought his custom-made supercomputer, exceptional in performance. He spent his days there, eating, drinking, sleeping, and using the military network via satellite to keep tabs on the world outside, the world that hadn't completely disappeared yet.
Because of his connection to the outside world, Miao Jia understood the world's changes better than those trapped in the warehouse, anxious about the uncertain future.
Using military satellites, he saw the anomalies' movements, realizing the military hadn't deployed in response. It made Miao Jia feel uneasy and desperate.
The previous night's skirmish gave him hope. If the military decided to defend the Yun City warehouse, aligning with stronger individuals would at least guarantee their survival.
Meeting Fu Shiwu and Tang Xuhai, who were observing the mutant plants, made Miao Jia think his chance to shine had arrived!
However, these two fellows were so unfriendly; they hurt the tender, fragile soul of Miao Jia deeply.
Tang Xuhai neither confirmed nor denied Miao Jia's obvious intentions, but Fu Shiwu seemed intrigued.
Currently, they had no access to external news beyond what they saw on TV in the barracks. This worried Fu Shiwu, considering Miao Jia might serve as a valuable intelligence asset.
Glancing at Tang Xuhai, who subtly nodded, it was apparent he had similar thoughts, but he couldn't directly accept Miao Jia's offer. Such a quick acceptance might make Miao Jia, who appeared unconventional, underestimate them and be difficult to manage in the future. Tang Xuhai also had a desire to discipline this overly smooth-talking youngster and instill military discipline.
Unbeknownst to Miao Jia, Tang Xuhai designated him as a new recruit and soon subjected him to inhumane training, labeled as "self-defense training"!
The three of them stayed there that evening until Wen Zhaoming returned late at night. Under Miao Jia's guidance, the three learned about the situation outside. When Wen Zhaoming, controlling his wheelchair almost out of energy, returned and overheard their conversation, he immediately joined in.
Miao Jia succinctly summarized the previous events to Wen Zhaoming, showing him some pictures.
"The plant mutations were the latest. Before that, animals, especially mammals and birds, mutated due to the source molecules. In the initial seven days when people believed the epidemic had broken out on a large scale, there were already numerous deaths among mammals and birds. However, this situation didn't receive much attention. People were focused on the sick and changes in the sky."
Miao Jia's throat felt dry; he licked his lips and thanked Fu Shiwu for pouring him some water.
"Thanks, Brother Fu." Miao Jia, after enduring the two men's successive torment, was deeply moved by Fu Shiwu's small act of kindness.
He gulped it down and continued for Wen Zhaoming, "Later, the deaths of birds increased, causing distress to many in the farming industry. Finally, orders were issued to dispose of all dead livestock and poultry on-site. Though this made it to the news, it didn't receive much attention."
Wen Zhaoming nodded in understanding. During that time, people were focused on the sick and celestial changes; who would have the mind to care about livestock?
"The earliest mutated animals appeared in the Kyoto Zoo," Miao Jia switched to some pictures of large animals, "like this brown bear and Asian elephant. Suddenly, they became stronger, breaking out of their enclosures. Later, there were antelopes and their evolved jumping abilities."
"That's just the beginning," Miao Jia emphasized, then switched to another set of pictures, "These are mutated creatures found closest to H province in S province."
"Mutated creatures? You mean mutants?" Wen Zhaoming exclaimed.
"Exactly, that's the term." Miao Jia nodded seriously. "Although we're not sure how these source molecules cause mutations and awaken abilities, it's fair for all life on Earth. Not only have there been mutant animals, but there are also mutant plants. Scientists classify them into sources of human beings, animals, and plants. However, those in the know prefer calling them ability holders, plant abilities, and animal abilities."
"Not only that, but they've even drawn clear boundaries between mutations and abilities. It's supposedly based on the amount of source molecules in the body, but they haven't publicized the criteria yet, at least not to my knowledge," Miao Jia added.
Wen Zhaoming looked at the still inexperienced youngster with astonishment, casting a curious glance at Tang Xuhai and Fu Shiwu.
Tang Xuhai and Fu Shiwu, having experienced the youngster's formidable information gathering skills before he arrived, though taken aback, silently restrained their reactions.
Wen Zhaoming blinked, quickly calming down. Miao Jia was a highly valuable talent, but to manage him,
they needed to treat him right, not just as an asset. Tang Xuhai's "self-defense training" was a bit too much for someone so young.
Fu Shiwu handed Miao Jia another glass of water, noting Miao Jia's extensive knowledge.
"Please continue," Wen Zhaoming encouraged.
"Yes, there have been more frequent appearances of anomalies," Miao Jia continued, "They've reached the boundaries of H province, and rumors suggest that larger anomalies have been spotted close to the capital."
Wen Zhaoming listened attentively while the three men discussed the situation. Miao Jia's information shocked and informed them, giving a clearer picture of the world outside their confines. This new knowledge would be vital in deciding their next steps.
