As Tang Xuhai and Captain Xing's moods grew heavy, the sky brightened, casting a faint red glow, intensifying their expressions.
"Oh no!" Captain Xing looked up at the reddish sky, "It's going to rain!"
Tang Xuhai clenched his jaw tightly and angrily shook his fist.
Even the heavens weren't on their side!
Ever since the sky had been shrouded every night, people hadn't seen the stars.
Usually experienced individuals could predict rain or clear skies by the nighttime cloud patterns. But now, with the sky completely obscured, even Tang Xuhai, who had undergone rigorous training, couldn't discern it anymore.
Summer was naturally a rainy season, sudden thunderstorms were common. Lately, rains in Cloud City had typically come in the evening and lasted only an hour or two, but today it started pouring in the early morning.
Under his furrowed brows, Tang Xuhai stared intensely at the night sky.
Pitter-patter.
A droplet hit his cheek. He wiped it away, and soon, more raindrops poured down.
"Supernatural Team! Special Ops Team! Stay alert!!" the military leader shouted hoarsely.
"Xiao Tang, if there's an evolved alien, I'm counting on you!" Captain Xing looked at Tang Xuhai earnestly.
"I understand!" Tang Xuhai responded promptly without hesitation.
Captain Xing nodded with relief, then strode into the intensifying rain curtain to command the Special Ops Team.
Taking a deep breath, Tang Xuhai tasted the earthy smell in the rain, filling his mouth and lungs.
With his dual swords in hand, Tang Xuhai dashed through the rain to the defense structure at the door, swiftly hopping onto the guard post's roof.
Meanwhile, Fu Shiwu and Wen Zhaoming were caught off guard by the sudden rain. The place they were in offered no cover!
"It's raining!" Fu Shiwu raised his hand to catch the rain. He looked at Wen Zhaoming, who remained calm beside him, and worriedly suggested, "What do we do? Should we find another place to avoid the rain? How about under the warehouse eaves? It might be a bit brighter there and not much worse than here."
Wen Zhaoming calmly replied, "No need. Let's stay here. When it rains, the alien's vision is further affected, which works in our favor."
Their different positions in the battleground meant different impacts.
While Tang Xuhai's team was in the light and the evolved aliens in darkness, it was the reverse for Fu Shiwu's side.
Fu Shiwu was concerned about something else entirely. After hesitating for a while, he spoke directly, "I think your health is too fragile. Just sleeping on the ground for one night made you catch a cold. Getting soaked like this, you'll definitely fall ill. Instead of getting sick later, why not move now? Why be so stubborn?"
Fu Shiwu lacked the art of saying things nicely while being convincing, unlike Wen Zhaoming. He worried about Wen Zhaoming's health but couldn't comfort him with words, only bluntly addressing the issue that concerned him the most.
To his surprise, Wen Zhaoming, though expressionless, sensed genuine concern in Fu Shiwu's stiff demeanor.
This caught him off guard!
He was aware that he behaved oddly around Fu Shiwu, probably due to the other's unique ability influencing his perception. However, even knowing the root cause, Wen Zhaoming couldn't shake off the lasting impression.
This made him instinctively apprehensive and uneasy in front of Fu Shiwu's serious facade. Paradoxically, while Fu Shiwu's words directly poked at his sensitive issue, Wen Zhaoming could sense genuine worry beneath the hardness.
This juxtaposition of emotions left Wen Zhaoming unsure of how to react!
Wen Zhaoming's expression became unnatural, and he tried to ease the tension, saying, "Don't worry. Did you forget I'm a fire-based supernatural? I can raise my body temperature a bit, guaranteeing I won't catch a cold."
Fu Shiwu breathed a sigh of relief. Later, feeling embarrassed about his earlier straightforwardness, he looked at Wen Zhaoming's face, secretly trying to gauge if he might be upset.
Fu Shiwu was caught in a small dilemma. Should he apologize now?
At that moment, Wen Zhaoming raised his head, letting the rain drench his head.
Then he said to Fu Shiwu, "If the evolution of these aliens is unstoppable, we'll face more dangerous situations in the future, much harder than now. It's not about adapting to the environment; it's about us adapting ourselves to it. Our goal isn't to evade but to confront it head-on. That's the only way to have a chance at victory."
Fu Shiwu empathized and nodded solemnly. When had he ever gone out without an umbrella?! But now, he didn't have the leisure to find one; just like wild animals on the African savannah, he was fully exposed to the rain.
"This is a complete return to the primitive," Fu Shiwu sighed.
After exchanging these words, Wen Zhaoming and Fu Shiwu fell into silence, quietly gazing into the increasingly misty night.
The atmosphere on Tang Xuhai's side was much tenser than the two of them because the rain obstructed their visibility. Evolved aliens slipped through the gaps and began attacking the Special Ops Team. Members of the Supernatural Team also joined the fray.
These supernatural individuals were carefully selected, having shown exceptional performance during previous defense operations. Now, they unleashed their powers, creating a scene reminiscent of a sci-fi blockbuster with their various abilities.
Lines of fire, fireballs, miniature tornadoes, metallic blades, sharp stone spikes protruded from the ground, and most strikingly, lightning bolts resembling those between heaven and earth.
On this stormy night, the empowered electric-type supernaturals displayed exponentially enhanced abilities.
Suddenly, the onslaught at the entrance was pushed back.
Just as people started to breathe a sigh of relief, a ghostly figure darted through the night.
"Here they come!!!" Tang Xuhai shouted and leaped down from the roof, splashing water with each step as he chased after the distant figure.
"What?!" "Where?" "How come I can't see anything?! Could he be mistaken?!"
Tang Xuhai's abrupt action bewildered the Supernatural Team. They had never encountered evolved aliens before. Over these days, facing ordinary aliens had been easy for them to defeat with their powers, gradually inflating their confidence and leading to a sense of arrogance.
The military's descriptions of the aliens were quite fearsome, yet they looked down on the military's seriousness. They were merely a team composed of people with no abilities facing slightly tougher aliens, making these supernaturals feel competent enough to handle it.
Among the Supernatural Team, many had such thoughts.
These doubts about Tang Xuhai's warning were soon shattered.
Two swift figures rushed toward them in the night!
Their speed was astonishingly fast; if it weren't for the rain's visible trajectory, these individuals wouldn't have caught sight of the alien figures.
"Fire!" Captain Xing roared loudly.
While others were becoming paranoid, members of the Special Ops Team
didn't relax their vigilance. They had encountered evolved aliens firsthand!
A soldier hesitated on where to shoot, then threw himself in front of the heavy machine gun, pulled the trigger, and three tongues of fire spat from the muzzle, bullets jetting into the rain.
"Fire! Fire! Fire! What are you waiting for?! Are you waiting to die?!" the commander bellowed.
It wasn't surprising that these soldiers hesitated; their ammunition was almost depleted. In such a situation without visible targets, no one was willing to blindly shoot and waste bullets!
"Supernaturals! Attack!! Attack with all your might!!!" the commander roared, unusually fierce towards these supernaturals who were always treated with respect: "Show your full strength. Whoever dares to slack, I'll take care of them!!"
The supernaturals were on edge, swallowing hard. Their abilities were continuously unleashed, each displaying their unique powers, illuminating the dim field.
"Oh damn!" A fire-based supernatural's expression changed drastically. A water stream in the rain was heading straight for them. The alien's speed was astonishing; even before they could react, it knocked down a supernatural!
"Ahhhh!!!" A voice shrieked loudly.
"For heaven's sake, shut up!!" Another supernatural slapped the noisy person, rendering them unconscious.
It was high time to stop creating tension at this point.
The electric-type supernatural reacted swiftly, disregarding the fallen companion's safety and struck lightning at the alien.
Unfortunately, the action came too late. The alien, having knocked down the supernatural, sprung towards another person.
"Spread out!!" Captain Xing yelled.
