Chapter 20: A Counterstrike

Wearing a headgear and dressed in black, Gibson effortlessly took down three on-duty bodyguards and made his way to the villa. The gang members guarding the place had only undergone basic training and were no match for the seasoned elites.

These three guards were only aware of the danger when Gibson's dagger struck their vital points.

Gibson arrived at the side entrance of the villa where a guard was dozing off. Quietly, he approached and covered the guard's mouth with one hand while swiftly slashing his throat with a tactical knife in the other.

After that, Gibson gave a thumbs-up signal behind him, and two gun-wielding teammates followed closely.

They were all experts in urban special operations.

When it came to using knives, Gibson was a true master among masters. No one in the entire team could rival his skill.

His comrades skillfully picked the lock, and they quietly opened the door.

Gibson gently pushed the door open, while his teammate raised an MP5 equipped with a tactical flashlight and entered the villa.

Boom!

Suddenly, an explosion erupted near the main entrance of the villa, slightly distracting Gibson and his two teammates.

From the adjacent room, a figure darted out. Before the teammate could turn his gun around, he was shot in the chest and fell to the ground. The other teammate received a punch to the face, and the sound of bones shattering echoed through the room.

Gibson wanted to sound the alarm but was immediately met with a dagger aimed at his throat. Without hesitation, he countered with his own knife.

His opponent was incredibly fast!

However, when it came to close combat with knives, Gibson had never feared anyone!

The daggers clashed, and his opponent's wrist sank, driving the long knife towards Gibson's vulnerable chest.

Too fast!

His opponent's movements were much faster than his!

Gibson tried to parry the attack with his own knife, but his opponent grabbed his blade.

The person's grip was like that of an iron clamp, showing no fear of the knife's edge.

Gibson felt a chill in his heart, and his body was suddenly devoid of strength.

The person, known as Ronan, pulled back the knife and dealt another blow to the teammate who had taken a punch to the face!

Under the strength of his steel-like claws, his punch was as powerful as a ten-pound sledgehammer.

Gunshots rang out, alarming the intruders and alerting the remaining guards.

Both sides immediately engaged in intense gunfire!

Ronan sheathed his knife and activated his spiritual vision, harvesting the souls of the three guards.

Information flashed through his mind.

Lock-picking: A skill of a proficient locksmith!

Exiting through the side door, there were bodyguards' corpses lying around. Ronan whispered, "Let's go!"

Pedro and Jessica followed him outside.

In the nearby open space, a black Cherokee was parked. Pedro called out to Jessica, "Get in the car! Quickly!"

The number of intruders was unknown, but there were intense gunshots and continuous screams as they stormed into the villa.

Jessica got into the car, while keeping an eye on Ronan, who was holding a gun. Luckily, he was prepared.

The Cherokee's engine started, and Ronan swiftly leaped into the backseat, closing the door. At the same time, Pedro pressed a remote control, and the electric gate opened slowly.

"Let's go!" Ronan said.

They needed to move and find an opportunity.

At the villa's entrance, there were three individuals in black combat uniforms. They turned their heads towards the gate and then saw the car speeding towards them.

Ronan raised his gun and shot, causing two tactical team members to fall.

James had already taken cover behind a column and shouted through the radio, "Attention! Car coming out! Attention! Car coming out!"

Without needing Ronan's reminder, Jessica immediately huddled down on the backseat floor.

Before the Cherokee exited, Ronan fired several shots in succession, suppressing James, who was attempting to return fire, forcing him to keep his head down.

Through the radio, James could only say, "Bill, suspected princess, went to your location! Leave her alive!"

Turning onto the main road, Pedro stepped on the gas pedal, and the Cherokee roared out.

Ronan checked behind and changed the almost empty magazine. Jessica glanced up and saw no car following them, feeling a bit relieved.

Ahead, there was a small crossroads, enveloped in darkness under the night sky.

Suddenly, Ronan became alert in his mind, sensing danger from the east side of the crossroads. He immediately warned, "Brake!"

Since the previous night, Pedro had been saved by Ronan several times. Upon hearing the warning, he instinctively hit the brakes!

Ronan held onto Jessica with one hand and braced himself against the front seat with the other.

Screech—

The harsh sound of braking filled the air, leaving several dark streaks on the asphalt, and a burnt smell wafted up.

The Cherokee's speed dropped abruptly!

In front, the engine roared as a large truck rushed out from the east side of the intersection and blocked the path of the Cherokee.

If they hadn't braked in time, the Cherokee's front end would have collided near the driver's seat!

With a loud bang, the Cherokee's front crashed into the truck's body.

The deployed airbags cushioned Pedro's body.

Ronan hit the front seat, and Jessica cried out in pain from under her seat.

However, due to the timely braking, the impact was greatly reduced. Ronan's shoulder hurt a bit, but he was otherwise unharmed. He asked, "Are you both okay?"

Rubbing her arm, Jessica said, "I'm fine."

There was no sound from Pedro's side.

They had to escape in a hurry, so Pedro didn't have time to fasten his seatbelt.

Ronan glanced at him and thought, "Pedro isn't very lucky..."

Jessica asked, "Uncle Pedro?"

Ronan propped himself up with one hand and fired forward, taking down the people who came from the truck.

Then, he opened the door with a push and said, "Let's go!"

Ronan was the first to get out of the car. People emerged from the villa's entrance, and he fired multiple shots to suppress the pursuers.

Jessica stumbled out of the car, turned to look at Pedro, and bit her lip as she followed Ronan running towards the east.

As they rushed behind a high wall, a few bullets flew past, barely missing them.

In that moment, Ronan felt like he was back at the quarry, facing Ian-Somos again.

After running several dozen meters, Ronan made a decision. He took a hand grenade from his tactical vest and said to Jessica, "Keep running forward, don't stop!"

Jessica looked at Ronan in surprise and slowed her pace slightly.

Ronan said, "I'll hold off the pursuers!"

With no other cars available at the villa, the Cherokee was destroyed. On two legs, they couldn't outrun four wheels.

Rather than being chased, they should use Jessica as bait and set up an ambush.

Jessica's eyes flickered, and she said, "I'll wait for you up ahead!"

She knew that without Ronan, she wouldn't be able to shake off the pursuers.

Ronan took a short run, jumped over the brick and iron-wrought fence, and entered someone else's yard.

He mentally calculated the timing and heard the sound of car engines. Three cars drove around the truck and turned the corner.

One SUV and two pickups.

The car headlights illuminated figures running.

"It's the princess!" James in the front passenger seat yelled, "Don't shoot!"

Lynch added, "Watch out for Ronan!"

As soon as the words were spoken, something fell in front of them. James and Lynch reacted quickly, knowing they couldn't stop the car, so they immediately pushed the doors and jumped out.

Boom—

An explosion sounded, and the first car was directly turned into a fireball by the hand grenade.

Almost simultaneously, another explosion occurred in the rear. A hand grenade exploded on the side of one of the pickups, riddling the vehicle with holes. The two people on that side were critically injured.

With his M4 in hand, Ronan aimed at the last pickup and poured a barrage of bullets onto its cargo compartment.

This was just an ordinary civilian vehicle, which could hardly withstand handgun bullets, let alone rifle bullets.

Before he could finish firing, Ronan sensed danger and quickly took cover behind a cement wall, then lunged forward and dashed to another cement wall.

Bang, bang, bang—gunfire erupted, with Lynch and James shooting at the cement wall. The dense bullets sent fragments flying.

Ronan immediately counterattacked, aiming at James and firing three shots. James, highly alert, rolled and took cover behind the front of the pickup.

Taking advantage of this opportunity and relying on the Hunter's vigilance, Ronan moved quickly to avoid Lynch's shots, turned his gun, and sent the last two bullets from his rifle straight into Lynch's exposed body! Lynch fell forward, and the bullets fired by James hit the iron fence, creating sparks.

At this point, the last two people from the second and third cars finally got out.

Ronan crawled forward, quickly changed the magazine, and fired again.

The two members who wanted to exchange fire with Ronan fell to the ground.

"Ah—"

Amidst furious roars, James shot almost frantically, and the bullets hit the walls and buildings behind with a ping-pong sound.

Ronan temporarily avoided the confrontation and crawled forward. Just as he reached a drainpipe, bullets struck the flower rack on the inside of the wall, breaking off a piece of cactus, which rolled down and happened to hit his neck.

He felt a sharp pain in the back of his head and gritted his teeth.

The rate of fire from the automatic rifle was extremely fast, and James quickly ran out of bullets, so he hurriedly took cover behind the car.

Looking left and right, there was no living person left!

Under the light of the burning cars, Lynch, Ronan's partner of only a year, took a bullet to the face, and the upper part of his head was blown apart.

The tactical team members lay dead in various positions on the road and in the cars.

There was only one person on the opposing side!

One person named Ronan!

James was scared, and sweat covered his forehead.

At this moment, he wasn't thinking about the mission but about how to escape.

The third pickup should still be drivable!

James lowered his body as much as possible, intending to use the second pickup as cover and make his way to the third car.

Then, his lower leg and foot stuck out from the wheel.

With the Hunter's vigilance and aided by the burning fire, Ronan accurately caught sight of his prey's movement! He lay flat on the ground, extending the muzzle through the drainpipe and pulling the trigger.

The high chassis of the pickup provided a clear shooting range!

James' ankle was hit with intense pain, and he fell forward. Realizing the danger, he immediately extended one hand to support himself on the ground.

Bang—

The bullet broke his arm!

With a scream, James fell to the ground.

Bang, bang, bang!

Three shots hit James' chest precisely!

Ronan activated his spiritual vision and saw a red aura around the fallen bodies. With his left hand moving, he absorbed and harvested the soul fragments.

Lynch's soul fragments were +4.

James' soul fragments were +5.

The rest were all +2.

There was also a memory fragment: a young person who underwent CIA training and joined the CIA.

This was a CIA agent? A private?

No wonder he had a feeling of encountering Ian-Somos.

After confirming that there were no more living people at the scene, Ronan climbed over the fence and ran to the car.

When he shot at the third car, he avoided the front, as it was still operational. Ronan quickly pulled the corpses out of the way and drove around the first two cars, speeding eastward.

Mexicali was located near the border, and although shootings were a nightly occurrence, a large-scale firefight in a wealthy neighborhood would prompt the police to come, even if they were negligent.

The sound of sirens, signaling "It's over, it's over," could already be heard from a distance.

In just a few minutes, the pursuers were dealt with. Judging from the harvested soul fragments, one of them had a strength equivalent to Ian-Somos.

Through horizontal comparison, Ronan had a better understanding of his own strength. Currently, he was clearly stronger than a first-level private in the military system.

Confidence was gradually gained through experiences.
